Life as a parent is stressful enough. Life as a T1D parent is a whole other ballgame!
The demands of managing T1D are relentless. The constant vigilance, monitoring, calculating, decision-making, adjusting and nudging - usually while sleep deprived and running on empty!
Now stress is just a part of life, it’s normal and can even by healthy (in the right doses).
Burnout is NOT a normal part of life, and it is NOT healthy.
Burnout is our body crying out to tell us that our limits have been stretched for far too long.
There is no let up with T1D. The load is relentless and inescapable.
This is fertile ground for parental burnout to thrive.
Burnout affects our emotions, our thoughts, our body and our behaviour.
If we don’t get on to it in time it also affects our relationships, our parenting, our work and our future.
Burnout happens gradually. It’s hard to spot the signs at first or to know that it is burnout.
It traps us in cycles and our functioning declines as we become stuck until our body decides for us that enough is enough.
Research tells us that T1D parents are at risk of experiencing burnout. This makes complete sense when you think of how much we take on every day with no end in sight.
I have been researching and designing a programme for T1D parents who are experiencing burnout, or who recognise themselves as being on the path to burnout.
All T1D parents want and need to prioritise their children and their T1D management.
T1D parent burnout is common but NOT inevitable.
It is your sign that in order to be your best, things have to change.
The first cohort of our brand new programme: Choosing Me Over T1D will be open soon. Sign up with the priority list to be the first to be notified when the doors open.
If you recognise that you are experiencing burnout or are on that path towards burnout - act now.
